Typically you’ll expose for the bright back-light and make sure those bright parts are on the right hand side of your histogram. Cameras vary greatly in their dynamic range capabilities and the smaller the dynamic range, the less able the camera is to record everything from dark to bright and all in between. The reason I say that you should expose for the highlights is that there’s more data stored in those highlights. Even if the photograph looks a little too bright, you can darken the image later and retain more dynamic range than if you shot with a lower exposure. Just make sure you don’t blow the highlights out so that the brightest pixels fall just within the right hand end of the histogram.

These pixels will be at the right hand edge of the histogram. Make sure they’re almost but not quite white.

Exposing for the highlights with back lighting often ends up with silhouettes, or near-silhouettes. If you don’t want this effect, you can provide some fill light in the form of flash, or a bounce card. This isn’t always practical for wildlife, and sometimes it isn’t ethical if it would compromise the sight of the animal. I’ll do a separate blog on flash with wildlife, but it’s a very useful tool that’s often overlooked.

I was reminded of this when submitting some tropical bird photos to the RSPB’s image library yesterday, where the back light was often very strong. With a RAW image, you can boost the shadows quite a bit in post production without introducing blockiness or noise. This has the effect of balancing out the dynamic range in the image to be more what the eye can see. Very few cameras can match the range of the human eye, so RAW shooting is definitely your friend here. I’ll do an article about when and how to boost shadows in the future. The image of fallow deer above was shot with the highlights at the right hand end of the histogram and the foreground shadows needed lifting to balance the photograph.

If you have warm sunshine, particularly at dawn and dusk, the camera’s white balance (if on auto) will often assume the scene is a lot cooler than it actually is. You can counteract this by setting a warmer white balance of cloudy or even shade. Occasionally it may have to go beyond this. The best method is to shoot in raw and choose the white balance that matched what you saw in post production. The following image was taken at dawn and the colours really were that orange. I had to dial the colour temperature in to Lightroom afterwards to match what I saw.

It can be quite a creative thing to harness, although be careful when looking directly at strong sunlight through your camera, as you could damage your eyes and the camera’s sensor.

I’ll round this post off with three more images which show the use of lovely warm back light: firstly a rim-lit wildebeest (its beard works perfectly for back-light), then a short-eared owl (the lovely evening back-light is when these crepuscular predators hunt) and lastly dawn in Kielder Forest (the back-light coming through the trees and other foliage makes the image so much more interesting than if it had been shot with the sun behind).

THE JOURNAL SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2015 – TONY HENDERSON – ENVIRONMENT

PHOTOGRAPHER FINDS A WILDLIFE PARADISE ON DOORSTEP

WILDLIFE photographer Kaleel Zibe has been making up for lost time. As his hobby of photography developed, Kaleel turned professional seven years ago. The Farne Islands off Northumberland quickly became a favourite location.

“For me, the islands have been a late discovery since I became a professional photographer;” he says. “My real passion is wildlife photography and I still can’t believe it took so long to visit such an important place right on my doorstep. I thought I would have a go at documenting this amazing place!’

His book on the islands, part guide and part wildlife images, appeared in 2011, but now Kaleel has updated and expanded it with 200 extra pages of new pictures, species accounts, and photography tips. Wildlife of the Farne Islands 2nd Edition at £7.99 is in e-book form so that island visitors can carry it on their phone or tablet. To download go to kaleelzibe.com

Kaleel, who lives in Newcastle, operates his wildlife and sports photography venture from Dissington in Northumberland and also runs an ink business, Multichem, in Hexham. He leads picture safaris to Kenya and the Farne Islands, and also runs photography workshops.

He says: “There are so many thousands of birds on the Fame Islands that it is a feast for the eyes, whether people go for the photography or not. It’s a fantastic place. The book has been a pet project for me for seven years. I love wildlife and the islands, so producing the book has been a personal ambition. It is a celebration of the natural wonders of the Farne Islands. In the breeding season they are a Mecca for anybody with an interest in birds. The angelic terns, jostling guillemots, immaculate kittiwakes, and prehistoric looking shags vie for your attention with the pilfering gulls, wizened fulmars and tight-sitting eiders.

”Also, because the islands are off the coast of Northumberland, thousands of migrant birds stream across, many stopping before reaching the coast:’

Included are results of recent scientific investigations of the islands’ birds. A project.by Newcastle University has shown that breeding puffins will fly

10km to 30km out from the islands to fish. And shags, which feed from the sea bed, will dive from between 15 and 30 metres.

The solar system is an amazing place. It just so happens that the Moon is about 400 times smaller than the Sun and 400 times closer to Earth than the Sun – about a quarter of a million miles. This coincidence means that every once in a while the Moon blocks out the light from the Sun: an eclipse. From where I was standing in Northumberland, it wasn’t a full eclipse, only partial, but it’s still an striking phenomenon as the temperature plummets, the birds stop singing and the sky darkens.

These images were taken with a Nikon D800E and a 600mm f/4 lens with a 2x teleconverter. So, that’s 1200mm. Not quite a telescope, but good enough to get decent pics. I had to use 1/8000 sec with f/32 and ISO 50 to avoid too much light frying the sensor. I also used Live View rather than looking through the viewfinder of the camera. That’s because the viewfinder looks through the lens at wide open aperture: 1200mm of magnification of the sun’s rays directly onto the retina? That’s like a laser in the head!

Regarding sharpness, the Earth’s atmosphere lends a certain amount of fuzziness to the end result, which is a shame. But it was worth doing regardless.

Now then, all I have to do is book myself onto the International Space Station to get a clear view of the next one…

K

I know the D3200 isn’t a particularly recent camera – indeed if it was, I wouldn’t have bought it because it would be too expensive. And as a professional photographer, you might ask, why would I buy one at all? Well, there are a few reasons:

Firstly, I’m not the sort of photographer that says one must have top notch kit for all occasions. Even thought the D3200 is very cheap and has plenty of limitations, it has its niche and I intend to add it to the D4 and D800E as a third and very useful camera to the stable. Typically this would be for when I don’t need either the speed or the ISO performance of the other two.

Secondly, a lot of people turn up on my workshops with lower end SLRs and bridge cameras and it’s always useful to know my way around these first hand and not just from the manuals I download to my iPhone when teaching.

Thirdly, this is a tiny camera and quite literally fits in my coat pocket. I’m not used to such practicality! The small form factor and lightness make this an ideal camera to have on you at all times, whereas packing the big guns is a hassle.

Fourthly, I bought it to use in camera traps and for adding an additional view where two cameras aren’t enough. This might mean in a multi-trap setup, or as more recently, when I filmed the Elf Run, adding a high up static camera angle.

We had a family day out at Seahouses in Northumberland today, so I thought I’d try the camera out with a 50mm f/1.4 prime lens. I have to say, I’m impressed! The only major thing I seem to need to add in post production is some extra sharpening. The dynamic range appears good and the camera handles pretty well in the hand. It took me a while to get used to the small format and the shared controls – remember, I’m used to dedicated controls on the D4 and D800E – but I got to grips with it pretty quickly. Even when I accidentally underexposed a few shots by three full stops, the noise was acceptable for some purposes at ISO3200. This is really expecting a lot of a camera: 3 stops down at ISO3200. Camera technology has come on in leaps and bounds since the early days of digital and I think it’s a lesson we pros can learn: just how good some of these so called bottom of the range cameras actually are.

I often like to use flash in portrait photography so that I can lift shadows and shoot against the sun for example. This compensates for the lack of dynamic range on most DSLRs by allowing the camera to expose for the bright parts (e.g. the sky) while the flash lights up the foreground (e.g. a face). The flash was more than powerful enough to cope with this, even at moderate distances, and a little post-processing in Lightroom sorted out a tiny amount of red-eye.

All in all, I’m very impressed with this little camera and it’ll be a very useful addition to the armoury. Here are the rest of the photos from today with comments:

Here are the photos from this fantastic event. I also shot a short film of the event. See below to buy digital images or prints.

There are many more images for the 50K Holy Island to Craster leg than for the 100K and 100 mile events. That’s because the field got increasingly strung out as the race wore so on that I only had the opportunity to take a handful of photos at each location. For example, I spent an hour and a half in the blackness of Harwood Forest and only two people went past! One or two of the images are video freeze-frames, particularly towards the end. I’ve got hours of video footage. The challenge now is to condense that to about 3 minutes! Sorry I didn’t hang around after about 4:30am at Chollerford to see more of you come through the finish – I’d been up for 26 hours and was ready to drop. However, I feel like a complete lightweight compared to you incredible and awe-inspiring people who did this event and endured for much longer than I did. Hats off to all of you for taking part and finishing the 50K, 100K and 100 mile races: it’s a day that will remain with me as a fond memory as I think of what you amazing people have achieved.

The first Highly Commended image was a red deer stag (see below).

This young grey seal was lying contentedly on Longstone Island at Northumberland’s Farne Islands in winter 2012. I’d taken quite a few shots of the full face and body, but it seemed to me that one of the most important and interesting parts of a seal’s head is its whiskers, which are used to enhance sensory perception of their prey. This image concentrates on those fishing bristles.

The image was also shortlisted in 2013’s BWPA awards.
