In my experience, there is nothing that does that quite as well as baby animals. It’s probably got a lot to do with the cute factor.

I’ve collected here some of the baby animals and young wildlife photos that I’ve taken over the years. Each one of them triggers a fond memory and takes me back to where and when I took that photo. Whilst I’ve described a little about how to approach taking these shots below, this is perhaps less of a Tips blog post than a celebration of young wildlife. Having said that, there are one are two things that are worth noting about taking photographs of juveniles and baby animals and birds and it would be broadly covered under the heading of creating a disturbance to the animal at its most vulnerable. More of that in a minute.

photograph and film young animals: they tend to be more playful and more cute than their parents. It’s often just a case of pointing your camera and waiting for them to do something funny or cute. All the usual rules of wildlife photography composition and camera settings apply just in the way that they would for adults, but one thing that I think often sets young animals apart from adults is that they are often really good for interactive shots because of that playfulness. Watching lion cubs or young elephants play-fighting is an absolute joy. And to photograph them doing that: even better.

So for example you might want to put a cute baby with its parent to show the different sizes and parental love and protection, rather than only taking photographs of the young animal by itself. Putting a parent in the frame also underlines how small the babies can be.

sep-solid" style="border-color:#e0dede;">

Lastly, the prickly business of whether you should be taking the photo in the first place. This is particularly important to consider where the species is threatened or endangered. For these animals and birds, they need the utmost protection when at their most vulnerable, which is usually when they are very young and still at the nest / den etc. As such, they are often protected by laws and rules that stipulate when they can and can’t be approached – including to be photographed.

An example of this would be birds in the UK covered under Schedule 1 licenses: you would need one of these licenses to get anywhere near these creatures at their nest. The BTO issues licenses on behalf of Natural England. They also have a list that tells you which birds are protected and in which territories. These licenses are often called disturbance licenses because you are intentionally creating a disturbance at this species’ most vulnerable point by approaching them. Obviously, photographing the animals at this sensitive time is a disturbance too, particularly if you get close, as we often want to in photography for that special shot.

With endangered species, this is not only a risk for their survival (nest abandonment, behavioural change, increased risk of predation, etc.), but it is illegal and you could be prosecuted. So, the long and the short of it is that you need to know which species are vulnerable and protected before you even attempt to go and photograph them. Occasionally you may be allowed to photograph a sensitive species for a specific purpose if in the long run it does the conservation of that species some good.

For example, several years ago I did a project on red kites, which are protected birds. I was attached to the RSPB who were doing a project in our local area and was asked to take photographs at and near the nest sites of some of the kites. This could only be done under the supervision of the local RSPB team who had a Schedule 1 disturbance license. I was then allowed to photograph the nest site and young birds as long as I made myself scarce if anybody walked nearby and never disclosed to anybody where the nest was. I also ended up taking a photograph of a young kite that had fallen out of its nest and was being kept in an undisclosed location before being later released.

Sometimes they will say we must move away from an animal to avoid distress. This must be the baseline for all wildlife viewing, never mind photography. And it is particularly important where young animals are concerned.

All this being said, if you’ve done your research and you either know the species is not threatened, or you have the permission of a body who can grant you access, then carry on.

You may at this point be thinking, well there are plenty of garden birds or woodland animals that are not threatened that would be fair game to photograph when young. Just bear in mind that all animals when very young are vulnerable, even if the species itself is not protected. Always exercise caution and don’t get too close. Use your common sense: you can usually tell when wildlife feels under threat.

THE JOURNAL SATURDAY, JUNE 13, 2015 – TONY HENDERSON – ENVIRONMENT

PHOTOGRAPHER FINDS A WILDLIFE PARADISE ON DOORSTEP

WILDLIFE photographer Kaleel Zibe has been making up for lost time. As his hobby of photography developed, Kaleel turned professional seven years ago. The Farne Islands off Northumberland quickly became a favourite location.

“For me, the islands have been a late discovery since I became a professional photographer;” he says. “My real passion is wildlife photography and I still can’t believe it took so long to visit such an important place right on my doorstep. I thought I would have a go at documenting this amazing place!’

His book on the islands, part guide and part wildlife images, appeared in 2011, but now Kaleel has updated and expanded it with 200 extra pages of new pictures, species accounts, and photography tips. Wildlife of the Farne Islands 2nd Edition at £7.99 is in e-book form so that island visitors can carry it on their phone or tablet. To download go to kaleelzibe.com

Kaleel, who lives in Newcastle, operates his wildlife and sports photography venture from Dissington in Northumberland and also runs an ink business, Multichem, in Hexham. He leads picture safaris to Kenya and the Farne Islands, and also runs photography workshops.

He says: “There are so many thousands of birds on the Fame Islands that it is a feast for the eyes, whether people go for the photography or not. It’s a fantastic place. The book has been a pet project for me for seven years. I love wildlife and the islands, so producing the book has been a personal ambition. It is a celebration of the natural wonders of the Farne Islands. In the breeding season they are a Mecca for anybody with an interest in birds. The angelic terns, jostling guillemots, immaculate kittiwakes, and prehistoric looking shags vie for your attention with the pilfering gulls, wizened fulmars and tight-sitting eiders.

”Also, because the islands are off the coast of Northumberland, thousands of migrant birds stream across, many stopping before reaching the coast:’

Included are results of recent scientific investigations of the islands’ birds. A project.by Newcastle University has shown that breeding puffins will fly

10km to 30km out from the islands to fish. And shags, which feed from the sea bed, will dive from between 15 and 30 metres.

The first Highly Commended image was a red deer stag (see below).

This young grey seal was lying contentedly on Longstone Island at Northumberland’s Farne Islands in winter 2012. I’d taken quite a few shots of the full face and body, but it seemed to me that one of the most important and interesting parts of a seal’s head is its whiskers, which are used to enhance sensory perception of their prey. This image concentrates on those fishing bristles.

The image was also shortlisted in 2013’s BWPA awards.

As the rain and temperature fall, further bending the already berry-laden rowan I’ve just parked under, I’m wondering whether that’s it for summer this year.

Mind, what a summer it’s been! Rarely have we had such good weather in continuous dollops. It’s certainly made up for the very cold start to the year, which saw a lot of wildlife delaying its breeding behaviour. Particularly notable were the sea birds of the Farne Islands, many of which were more than a month late. It’s these sea birds I’d like to concentrate on in this post because I’ve journeyed to the Farnes eight times this year – sometimes with clients on workshops and others by myself or with my children. As you’ll see, there aren’t just birds at the Farne Islands!

Oddly, the first stars of the show on visit 1 were not sea birds at all, but a pair of intrepid rock pipits, which had set up a nest under the boardwalk on Inner Farne near the lighthouse. Flitting back and forth despite countless visitors’ unsuspecting feet, the industrious couple brought all manner of insects back to the brood while the wardens sectioned off their part of the path. As far as I’m aware, the chicks fledged successfully.

Visit 2, 3 and 4 were with a full group of clients each. I don’t take many pics while I have a workshop so that I can concentrate on tuition, but I couldn’t resist firing off a few at least; the conditions were fantastic for photography most of the time. The birds and seals were on good form and after a long day out on the first outing, we were followed home by two pods of bottlenose dolphins which came to play with the boat. Simply magical. They even posed in front of Bamburgh Castle for us.

Trip 5 was one for my own photography and amongst the oodles of puffins, razorbills and guillemots there were lots of cute ‘jumplings’: baby guillemots taking their first plunge as they fledge off the cliffs into the open seas. There are tens of thousands of guillemots on the Farne Islands – what a noise – and smell! Later in the trip, razorbills were being buffeted by the high winds up the lighthouse cliffs, which made for some unusual portraits. And lastly, I tried some flash-lit shags, which I think really brings out those luminous green eyes.

Visits 6, 7 and 8 were also for my own photography and resulted in some shots I didn’t already have. There’s always something new to be found at the Farnes: it’s reassuring to know how diverse the wildlife is throughout the season and a trip to the islands is never wasted, even if it’s pouring down.

One of the trips was an evening looking for minke whales. We didn’t see any, but I managed to snaffle some manx shearwater and common scoter shots and we saw a harbour porpoise on the way back. No whales, but good opportunities to photograph the regiments of gulls and gannets that passed by.

Part of my mission for visits 6 & 7 was to get two of the more rare visitors to the Farnes: the roseate terns and the ‘mega’ twitch, the bridled tern. I’ll blog about those separately in a while.

The weather may be damp and dull and the summer may well be gasping its last breaths, but the swallows are still swooping about and chirruping happily. I’ve spent a fair bit of the summer photographing them in the UK and France this year, so that’s where the next blog post will take us.

In the meantime, if you’d like a copy of my book, “Wildlife of the Farne Islands”, you can get one here.

Scroll down for the remaining photos and if you enjoyed the article, please share it on Facebook, Twitter or by email. Thanks!

Hi all,

I’ve added a new gallery: ‘Farne Islands‘. This is a selection of images I took while writing the book ‘Wildlife of the Farne Islands‘.

The Farnes are a particular passion of mine. I have young kids, so can’t spend too much time away in exotic foreign locations. However, with the Farnes being so close (and it being an absolute paradise of seabirds and seals), I decided to write a book about the amazing wildlife on my own doorstep.

Hope you like the photos.
