Typically you’ll expose for the bright back-light and make sure those bright parts are on the right hand side of your histogram. Cameras vary greatly in their dynamic range capabilities and the smaller the dynamic range, the less able the camera is to record everything from dark to bright and all in between. The reason I say that you should expose for the highlights is that there’s more data stored in those highlights. Even if the photograph looks a little too bright, you can darken the image later and retain more dynamic range than if you shot with a lower exposure. Just make sure you don’t blow the highlights out so that the brightest pixels fall just within the right hand end of the histogram.

These pixels will be at the right hand edge of the histogram. Make sure they’re almost but not quite white.

Exposing for the highlights with back lighting often ends up with silhouettes, or near-silhouettes. If you don’t want this effect, you can provide some fill light in the form of flash, or a bounce card. This isn’t always practical for wildlife, and sometimes it isn’t ethical if it would compromise the sight of the animal. I’ll do a separate blog on flash with wildlife, but it’s a very useful tool that’s often overlooked.

I was reminded of this when submitting some tropical bird photos to the RSPB’s image library yesterday, where the back light was often very strong. With a RAW image, you can boost the shadows quite a bit in post production without introducing blockiness or noise. This has the effect of balancing out the dynamic range in the image to be more what the eye can see. Very few cameras can match the range of the human eye, so RAW shooting is definitely your friend here. I’ll do an article about when and how to boost shadows in the future. The image of fallow deer above was shot with the highlights at the right hand end of the histogram and the foreground shadows needed lifting to balance the photograph.

If you have warm sunshine, particularly at dawn and dusk, the camera’s white balance (if on auto) will often assume the scene is a lot cooler than it actually is. You can counteract this by setting a warmer white balance of cloudy or even shade. Occasionally it may have to go beyond this. The best method is to shoot in raw and choose the white balance that matched what you saw in post production. The following image was taken at dawn and the colours really were that orange. I had to dial the colour temperature in to Lightroom afterwards to match what I saw.

I’ll round this post off with three more images which show the use of lovely warm back light: firstly a rim-lit wildebeest (its beard works perfectly for back-light), then a short-eared owl (the lovely evening back-light is when these crepuscular predators hunt) and lastly dawn in Kielder Forest (the back-light coming through the trees and other foliage makes the image so much more interesting than if it had been shot with the sun behind).

After a visit from the doctors where she is told some heartbreaking news, Theo her partner of six years demands to find out what is happening with her. The Wild Dream seems to be her only haven that will help her and possibly save her relationship.

Like the train companies say: wrong kind of snow.

As part of my #bbctownmoor project, I popped out yesterday to take advantage of the fine weather – an oasis of a day in the seemingly endless winter gloom. I’m taking photos of all sorts of things for the BBC project, from the cows and the Hoppings fair to the runners and the wildlife. Yesterday’s trip followed an unsuccessful foray a few days earlier when it snowed and everything was frankly hiding. In truth I was hoping for foxes (I could smell them), but frankly I was open to finding anything with fur or feathers, so was delighted when I heard some blue tits singing. Actually singing in January! Music to my ears. I spent a little time with a pair of tits (ahem), who were happily searching for insects in the dead leaves of the trees bordering part of the Moor. A couple of wrens struck up song too, which was nice to hear. I then started looking for other common birds like great tits, robins and blackbirds, but what really took my attention was the high pitched triple whistle of long-tailed tits nearby. I started out being stealthy in the woodland, but then realised that the two birds working their way through the foliage looking for insect morsels couldn’t have cared less that I was crashing around nearby. Good job really, because keeping up with these tiny creatures as they flit from branch to branch never staying still is impossible without cracking a few twigs underfoot: speed rather than stealth. Long-tailed tits often travel around in large groups of 10-20 or even 30 or more, but it was lovely to even see just two. As I trogged through the woods I even got a distant snap of a great spotted woodpecker playing hide & seek. A good day with the camera. Anyway, I’ll shut up now and let the photos do the talking.

This shot of a black-headed gull in fantastic morning light was taken from Cow Hill on the Town Moor, looking across to the town centre. Newcastle United’s St. James’ Park football ground (right hand side) is sited on the Moor itself

It’s been a while since I last blogged: I’ve been rather busy. Firstly, I’ve gone back to running the family business – Multichem in Hexham – after a break of eight years. But I’m still doing my professional photography too. All designed to keep me off the streets and out of trouble, no doubt! I’ve got a few irons in the fire that I hope I can tell you about soon, but one has definitely come to fruition just now.

I’m delighted to announce that the BBC has commissioned me to take photographs for a project called The Secret Life of the Town Moor. I’m very excited about this as I’ve teamed up with two very special people: firstly world-renowned sound recordist, Chris Watson (of BBC Blue Planet fame) and secondly, photographer Jacky Longstaff, who teaches the foundation degree in Commercial Photography at Newcastle College.

Jacky already has some fantastic photos of the Moor that she took for her book “Room:”.

Chris and I will be photographing / recording new material over the next 12 months (starting in March) for the project to show the many faces and hidden features – both past and present – that make this open space both unique and intriguing.

It’ll be a very diverse range of subjects, from what we believe is the largest urban skylark population, to the Hoppings fair, with dung beetles, circus performers and the Park Run all fair game. There are so many facets to this amazing piece of protected land that I can hardly begin to list them. Did you know for example that on a clear day you can see The Cheviot from the top of Cow Hill? Or that Cow Hill itself is the spoil heap from the construction of Newcastle’s Central Motorway and was originally supposed to be a practise ski slope?

I hope you’ll join me as we record the changing face of the the Town Moor across the seasons, releasing an image and radio broadcast a month, culminating in an installation and gallery. BBC Online are hosting the project and various locations around the north east have been mentioned as possible gallery locations.

Exciting times indeed.

The post BBC Town Moor project first appeared on Kaleel Zibe.

Now then, that’s a big bird!

Red kites have been an important thread running through my wildlife photography for years. The RSPB originally commissioned me to get shots of the end of the reintroduction project here in the north east. Once the reintroduction had completed, the project handed over the baton to Friends of Red Kites (FoRK). For the past several months I’ve been doing a commission for FoRK: we had a 22m wingspan red kite to photograph at strategic landmarks around the North East. Here are a few of the resulting images which will form part of a roving exhibition.

Birds on the radio

BBC Radio 4’s Living World presenter, Trai Anfield did an excellent recent piece on our local kites. It was lovely to hear Trai and FoRK’s Harold Dobson talking about these magificent birds – 46 kites on a pylon no less!

Trai also works with us on our safaris.
